A healthy alternative to Bike Bath that cannot go ahead due to Coronavirus safeguards

Much loved cycling event is off as a mass-participation ride – replaced with opportunity to ride routes alone or with your own small group

This Sunday 5th July would have been Bike Bath – the city’s largest cycling event but of course cancelled in line with safeguarding for the Coronavirus pandemic.

Organiser Iconic Cycling Events has instead launched the Bike Bath Medal Rides Series, a choice of route options that can be downloaded on gpx, ranging from the shortest and flattest to the longest and gnarliest to satisfy all levels of fitness and cycling experience. And still enabling you to earn one of the precious finisher medals.

Richard Best from Iconic Cycling Events says that he is delighted that entrants have mostly either decided to donate their entry fee to the bike ride’s main charity beneficiary Dorothy House Hospice Care or rolled it over to 2021.

The new Bike Bath Medal Rides at least offer the opportunity to choose your ideal day over the summer, or even ride more than one. The only condition is that you stay within British Cycling guidelines which currently allow no more than six riders together and with at least two metres distancing.

Velo Club Walcot are as disappointed as anyone of course because according to secretary Nick Rearden, “It’s always our biggest turnout of the year and real showcase for cycling in Bath from a perfect venue and into the best possible countryside.”

Still, as ever we will keep riding as much as ever, just in smaller groups, with our families or alone and these routes will provide some extra inspiration and motivation for when we are able to ride Bike Bath again.

Stay safe, and we’ll see you at The Rec next year.
