Bath cycling club VC Walcot set itself the target of raising £1,000 for Dorothy House Hospice Care by holding a traditional cyclists’ Ride Out cake and coffee stop last Sunday. So many cyclists turned up that the budget was blown away in two hours.

Over 60 members and friends of Velo Club Walcot set out on Sunday 8th September 2019 from its meeting place at Orange Grove to cycle in five groups through various Wiltshire countryside routes to Dorothy House Hospice Care in Winsley.

They were joined by riders from other cycling clubs in the Bath and Bradford on Avon area to enjoy cakes baked by the membership and coffee provided by Society Cafe in Bath. With a £10 donation each, the total collected soon exceeded the £1,000 target the club committee had set, with organiser Mike Bedford pronouncing the event a “huge success”.

Raising awareness for Dorothy House Hospice Care

“Mind you,” said Mike, “this event was as much about raising awareness of the caring and compassionate work that Dorothy House staff carry out, as it is about raising money.”

“Hopefully, we’ve been able to introduce well over a hundred people to Dorothy House that might otherwise have cycled or driven past its door without realising what happens there.”

“For example,” said Mike, “Dorothy House house provides care for all patients with a life-limiting illness and not just cancer. 21% of patients live with another condition such as Motor Neurone Disease or Dementia.”

Dorothy House cares for patients across an area of 700 square miles, covering Bath & North East Somerset, and parts of Wiltshire and Somerset. From Malmesbury in the North to Shepton Mallet in the South, From Keynsham in the West to Devizes in the East.

Phillippa Watson from Dorothy House said, “I couldn’t believe how quickly it went and we were so lucky with the lovely weather, with cyclists lingering a while to read about the work we do. Thank you VC Walcot and the other cycling club members and especially all the cake makers.”
